Sedation Dentistry

With Sedation Dentistry, you can wake up to a new smile! Sedation is a safe, effective option that helps patients feel calm and relaxed in the dental chair. It also makes it easier for your dentist to give you higher quality care. Best of all, many insurance companies cover sedation and there are a variety of types to fit your need.

Dr. Sutherland doesn’t want you to avoid getting a smile you’ll love out of fear. He offers Sedation Dentistry to let you relax in the dental chair.

Patients with moderate and deep sedation tend to not even remember the procedure, which adds even more peace of mind.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is administered through a mask fitted over the patient’s nose. This method of sedation is often used for patients who are mildly or moderately anxious. The gas relaxes you and makes you calm, but you are fully conscious and able to communicate with your dentist.

IV Sedation

IV Sedation is recommended for more extensive dental work. Dr. Sutherland has an anesthesiologist ready to help you get the most treatment you need. Sedatives injected into the vein (intravenously) work faster than sedatives taken by mouth. They also induce a deep state of relaxation and partial or full memory loss. IV sedation is administered by a qualified and experienced professional. Patients often wake and wonder how the work got done so quickly. IV sedation works best for patients:

  • With severe dental anxiety
  • With physical, medical or emotional disability
  • Who need oral surgery or complex dental work

Oral Sedation

Patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety are given sedative pills that are stronger than nitrous oxide. You may feel sleepy or groggy, but you are easily aroused if needed. You may also need assistance to get home after the effects of sedatives wear off.
