Metal-Free Dentistry

Torrance Dental Arts offers you metal-free dentistry for beauty and health.

Metal was a popular material in dentistry for ages due to its durability and low cost. But since the metal amalgam used in dentistry is associated with health risks and isn’t visually appealing, more and more dentists these days are moving away from using metal for fillings and other dental procedures.

Specifically, amalgam contains mercury and has the potential to cause an allergic reaction. Resin and porcelain, on the other hand, don’t contain mercury and look the same as your natural teeth. Even organizations like the U.S. Food and Drug Association (FDA) and the American Dental Association (ADA) admit that there are potential risks associated with metal fillings.

Cons of Using Metal in Dentistry

There are a variety of reasons to avoid the use of metal in dentistry, from the health-related to cosmetic. While there can be specific reasons (such as allergies) why you shouldn’t receive dental treatment with metal, there are a large number of general cons associated with it. Here are some of them:

  • An unnatural appearance
  • An allergic or sensitive reaction
  • More discomfort when exposed to hot or cold
  • Expansion as it corrodes, potentially resulting in a fracture

Even if dental amalgam didn’t have any of these cons, there are better materials available today.

Pros of Metal-Free Dentistry

Metal used to be the only option in dentistry, but today dentists regularly use resin, porcelain, ceramic and more. In addition to not having the cons associated with metal, these materials offer a variety of other positives. Here are a few of them:

  • Virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth
  • No presence of mercury or other potentially unsafe metal
  • Low likelihood of sensitivity to hot or cold
  • More efficient placement methods
  • They feel the same as natural teeth
